Healing from trauma, how a massage can help

Massage can be more than just relaxation it can be a powerful way to reconnect with your body after trauma.

When someone experiences trauma the body often holds onto it. Muscles stay tense breathing becomes shallow and the nervous system can remain in a constant state of alert. Even when the mind tries to move on the body may still feel unsafe.

Through slow intentional touch, massage helps signal to the nervous system that it’s okay to relax. It can reduce stress hormones improve circulation and gently release areas where tension has been stored for a long time. Over time this can help shift the body from a fight or flight state into a calmer more regulated state.

Just as importantly massage creates a safe space to feel again at your own pace. For many people it becomes a way to rebuild trust in their body reconnect with sensations and regain a sense of control.

Healing from trauma is never linear and massage is not a replacement for therapy but it can be a meaningful part of the process. A quiet moment where the body is heard supported and allowed to let go.

If you want to understand this deeper I highly recommend the book The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk which explores how trauma lives in the body and how healing can happen through both mind and body
